Viêt-nam m;∎ in Vietnam au Viêt-nam►► the Vietnam War la guerre du Viêt-namⓘ THE VIETNAM WAR Ce conflit opposa, de 1954 à 1975, le Viêt-nam du Nord communiste au Viêt-nam du Sud, soutenu militairement par les États-Unis. Aussitôt critiqué par l'opinion publique nationale, l'effort de guerre américain s'intensifia considérablement au milieu des années 60, sans parvenir pour autant à faire basculer l'issue du conflit. À partir de 1970, sous la présidence de R. Nixon, un processus de cessez-le-feu fut engagé, aboutissant au retrait des troupes américaines en 1973. Un an plus tard, le sud du pays passa aux mains des communistes. Véritable traumatisme national, la guerre du Viêt-nam est l'un des épisodes les plus pénibles de l'histoire des États-Unis. La longueur du conflit, les atrocités commises de part et d'autre, le nombre très élevé de victimes, mais surtout les interrogations sur la finalité de cette guerre remirent radicalement en question la légitimité de l'intervention américaine et provoquèrent chez les jeunes Américains de l'époque un mouvement antimilitariste d'une ampleur sans précédent. -

8 Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Находится в г. Вашингтоне, у Зеркального пруда [Reflecting Pool] в саду Конституции [Constitution Gardens] на Национальной эспланаде [ Mall, The], рядом с мемориалом А. Линкольна [ Lincoln Memorial]. Представляет собой неглубокую траншею в форме шеврона (буквы V), внешняя стенка которой облицована черным полированным гранитом. Траншея полого опускается к повороту и вновь поднимается к выходу. На стене высечены имена около 58 тыс. американцев, погибших и пропавших без вести во Вьетнаме, начиная с 1959, главным образом во время войны [ Vietnam War]. Имена указаны в хронологической последовательности (по точной или предполагаемой дате гибели). Внутренняя сторона траншеи представляет собой невысокий поросший травой холм, увенчанный бронзовой скульптурой трех воинов работы Ф. Харта [Hart, Frederick] (1984). Мемориал сооружен по проекту архитектора Майи Лин [Lin, Maya], отобранному по конкурсу из 1500 представленных проектов. Открыт 13 ноября 1982.
